Left Coast Live (win free tickets!)

I can’t believe we haven’t posted about this! Left Coast Live is next week! It’s a five-day celebration of live music in downtown San Jose. There’ll be discussion panels, a movie about the music industry, and concerts from Monday to Thursday (all free); and on Friday, a super-intense music festival from 5 PM until 2 in the morning. Click through to learn more (including where and when we’re playing, and how you can get in for free).

To a Mother Concerned About File Sharing

First: Pirates are ruthless and violent criminals. Your son is not a pirate. He’s not even a thief. He’s just a kid who’s copying stuff.

Here’s what I think: It’s about support, and about respect.

video

I just added a page of live videos to the site. My personal favorite is “She Stole My Bike”, where Tom starts singing about sea cucumbers and I just look confused. Click through for more….

Bviolin

Next Saturday (March 28) we’re playing with Bviolin and the January Avalanche, “Persian Jazz Groove Gypsy Dance Folk Fusion”. Should be a great show! Click through for video and more details.

lucky penny

Probably my favorite thing about Friday’s show at Caffe Trieste was meeting Zamilla. (I hope I’m spelling her name right.) Zamilla is a little girl who saw our poster last week and quite reasonably wanted to know, “What’s a Tin Cat?” Friday afternoon, sightseeing with her parents in San Francisco, she insisted, “We have to go back to San Jose and see Tin Cat!”…

new show, new flyer

Hey, we have a show this Friday at Caffe Trieste.  The one in downtown San Jose, not the, uh, other ones.  Contain Her opens the show at 8.  Dave made a flyer.  I like it a lot.

old wine in new glasses

Last week at practice we spent some time finding new ways to play some old songs.  This is something we like to do – all of our songs have been through some changes as we’ve gone from solo or duo open mike performers to a five-piece rock band to the current power folk trio.  And [...]

thanks

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who came out to Red Rock tonight for our last show of the year (unless you invite us to your holiday party).  Playing with our friend Colin Carthen was totally fun – we’re hoping to do it again – and playing for you guys was a great way [...]

everything’s happening Saturday

Well, not everything, but check out all this good stuff: The 26th Annual Holiday Peace Fair at the Campbell United Methodist Church, featuring Annie and the Vets, Lisa Atkinson, and others. Young folkies Ivory Owl (try this video) at the Abbey, a cool new coffeehouse venue in Santa Cruz. Acoustic pop duo Emith at Cava, [...]

Pernikoff Brothers

These guys are really good. Funky bass, tight sibling harmonies, guitar and banjo, creative covers… very tasty. The MySpace doesn’t do them justice – fortunately they’re recording more this week – but try “I See You” or this Afro-pop-styled live video on YouTube. This one’s pretty good too. They’ve got a weekly gig, noon Saturdays [...]
